Olympic Celebration Contest

This week's contest at Spoonflower is the Olympic Celebration Contest.  The theme of this contest will be fabric designs celebrating the games and spirit of the traditional Olympics, but which do NOT employ the logos, mascots or the traditional Olympic rings.  Voting for this contest begins on Thursday, July 26th and ends on Wednesday, August 1st.

I titled my fabric design Olympic Medals.  I was inspired by the beautiful gold, silver and bronze medals adorned with a royal purple ribbon for the 2012 Olympics in London.  The royal purple ribbon is in honor of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.  I chose a green background representing the global coming together for these great and wonderous events.  The Olympics truly are a time of celebration for all!

Beauty

A few weeks ago we found a baby screech owl perched on a branch of our tree in the front yard.  For all of us here in our home it was exciting.  We spent the entire day going outside to check on her and to ooh and ahh at her beauty.  I asked what we should name her and my mother over the phone said Beauty.  So Beauty it is.  She even still had her fluffy baby feathers barely hanging on the sides of her wings.  She was precious and we felt blessed to have her in our tree in our front yard.  I can't even count how many times we would go out there and check on her but it was a lot.

Evening fell and Kate, my oldest, asked if we could go see her one more time before bed.  We grabbed the flashlight and pointed it in the direction of the branch that she so comfortably perched on all day long.  To our disappointment she was gone.  As we went inside I could see my little six year old daughter's shoulders hunched over making a bee line for her bedroom, and I just knew she had tears in her eyes.  I stopped her and gave her a big hug and said, "Are you sad that Beauty is gone?"  She shook her head.  I said, "I am too."  I said, "Aren't you thankful that she chose to spend her entire day with us?  How lucky we were right?"  She agreed.  I also said, "You never know she may come back one day to see us again."  Then I told her to do something in honor of Beauty to thank her for coming to visit us.  Twenty minutes later Kate turns the chalkboard around to show me a drawing that she made for Beauty.  I thought it was a pretty sweet tribute for this sweet baby owl who so kindly graced us with her presence for one lovely day.

1950's Dress

This is my fabric design for Spoonflower's weekly contest called the Mid-Century Cocktail Dress Contest!  Voting begins Thursday July 19th and ends on Wednesday, July 25th.  I have entered this contest with a design I titled Dreamy Blue.  I've posted two more mock-ups to give an idea of how this material would look as a 1950's dress.  The winner of this contest will have their material made into a cocktail dress for the production How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying at the Cary Players in Cary, North Carolina.  Designing for this contest was a thrill.  If you would like to check out my Mid-century Collection click here.

Mid-century Cocktail Dress Contest

Okay, I absolutely loved designing for this contest.  I have a Bachelors in Performing Arts from Wichita State University and many years of stage experience.  This contest coming up on Thursday, July 19th is called the Mid-century Cocktail Dress Contest.  The costume designer from a theater called the Cary Players in Cary, North Carolina is looking for a print to use for a vintage pattern cocktail dress in an upcoming production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really TryingSpoonflower created this contest to help them out because it's such a fun theme.  They are asking designers to come up with a print for a mid-20th century cocktail dress.

My first piece is the fabric design that I will be entering in the contest.  I actually created a total of 21 dresses out of fabric that I've designed.  I can not take full credit for all of the dresses.  John does magic in photoshop and both of our daughters Kate and Claire also had a hand in some of the design work.  We are a team here at Art Tree Designs!

Above is my Mid-century Cocktail Dress contest piece.

Voting for this fabulous contest begins on Thursday, July 19th.   If you are interested in seeing my entire Mid-century Collection click here.

Paper Collage Cakes Contest

This week's contest at Spoonflower is the Paper Collage Cakes Contest.  I created this design completely out of watercolor paints and watercolor paper.  My design is called Cupcakes and is now available for purchase!  For this contest we had to create the design out of paper only.  I will be very honest...I'm not sure which was harder not getting to use photoshop like I'm used to, or the fact that I could not find my scissors and had to use my three year old daughter's safety scissors to create this masterpiece.

This was a very fun competition for me.  I was inspired by a local cupcake business here in Plano, Texas called Sugar Queen Cupcakes

You do not have to be a member to vote and the last day to vote for your favorite designs will be on Wednesday, July 18th.  Also click here to check out my entire collection.

Anyone craving cupcakes yet?  I know I am!!! :-)
